World Cup to be a defining moment for transport infrastructure

The Department of Transport (DoT) says it is working closely with the host cities and provinces and spending a total of R13,6-billion in improving South Africa’s public transport infrastructure directly related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said at a media briefing in Pretoria last week that about R23-billion would be spent on the Gauteng freeway scheme; R16-billion on improving the passenger rail system during the next three to four years; and about R2-billion on train stations.
