US highways chief seeks private-public road projects

The commissioner of the state Division of Highways wants legislation supporting public-private partnerships on road projects to be passed during the current session.

Commissioner Paul Mattox said such partnerships would help keep the state road fund afloat. Local officials say companies could benefit by pushing along highway projects that would help them ship goods more efficiently.

"Using private money as a revenue source could be a great opportunity," Mattox said.

Already, 23 states have adopted legislation enabling such efforts.
