UK: Heated debate over private finance initiative in healthcare

Advocates and opponents of PFI in the NHS battled it out this week, as special interest groups seek to influence government policy under Gordon Brown

Both the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) trumpeted their views on the impact of PFI in healthcare provision, but from opposite sides of the argument.

Speaking to the BBC's File on 4, Dr Jonathan Fielden, chair of the BMAs consultants committee, pointed out that several NHS trusts are struggling to finance their repayments to contractors under PFI.

He cited the case of University Hospital Coventry, which had to borrow money to pay the first payment of 54m pounds it owed the contractor.
