Unions have welcomed the Health Secretary's promise to limit the extent of private sector involvement in the NHS.

Outlining his vision or the future of the NHS to the Health Select Committee yesterday, Alan Johnson said that there would be no third wave of independent sector treatment centres (ISTCs) after those already in the pipeline had been approved.

Kevin Coyne, Head of Health at Unite, said the union, which has always opposed what it terms "ill-thought out market reforms," was "particularly pleased" by the news.
