Uganda: World Bank Okays $360 Million for Bujagali Power Project

Work on the 250MW Bujagali hydropower station will finally start following approval by the World Bank last week of US$360 million in loans and guarantees.

The support to the project, which will cost $750 million in total, is an integral component of Uganda's strategy to close an energy supply gap that has seriously constrained social and economic development in Uganda.

"Uganda's workforce is expected to double over the next 15 years, making the creation of jobs through expanded industry, tourism, and commercial services critical,"said a press release posted on the bank's website quoting Ms. Judy O'Connor, World Bank Country Director for Uganda and Tanzania.
