U-turn as Salmond admits private money will build Scots schools and hospitals

In a major U-turn for the party, SNP ministers at Holyrood have bowed to the inevitable and formally accepted the role of private finance in the construction of schools, hospitals and roads.

The move is certain to infuriate both trade unions and the left wing of the SNP since it goes against the spirit of the previous SNP commitment to phase out the the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in the delivery of public sector infrastructure projects.
