Andrew Swiger, an executive at Exxon Mobil Corp., which plays a key role in the future of the ill-fated Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, had a few words to say about government intervention at a breakfast speech in Calgary yesterday.

Standing at a podium, looking out at a room full of local oil and gas types, he had this to say: "What we need to get away from, from a principle perspective, is a policy of where government gets in the business of picking winners.

"That has never worked in the past," he said. "It won't work in the future."
