Taxpayers set to bail out Galileo as PPP faces collapse

European governments have thrown a lifeline to the Galileo satellite navigation project, promising 1.6bn pounds of public money and abandoning plans that would have seen European businesses pay to deliver most of the project.

At a meeting in Luxembourg on Friday (8 June) European Commission delegates approved the money to supplement the 0.9bn pounds already committed by European states. Ministers have asked the EU's executive commission to draft a detailed funding proposal that includes "all possible options of public funding" in time for a meeting in October.
