Tanzania: Buying Public Utilities Here is a Risky Business

Nairobi (The East African)- In seminars and workshops, most World Bank experts involved in the privatisation project in Tanzania will today openly admit that privatisation of utilities in the country has failed.

Recently, a senior private-sector development specialist at the Dar es Salaam World Bank Country Office, Lucy M. Fye, noted that while Tanzania has been relatively open to private participation in infrastructure over the past decade, inviting private participation in the telecom, energy, water and transport sectors, progress has been slow.

She cautioned that the country needed to learn from past mistakes in order to avoid further disappointments in the future.
