The 31st American president, Herbert Hoover, who was an engineer by profession, established an unparalleled reputation in the US presidency for public service.
Besides being an engineer, Hoover was also an administrator and a humanitarian.
By combining these three skills, he initiated an expanded public-works programme in the US to alleviate the devastating effects of the Great Depression, which hit the world economy in the first year of his presidency, in 1929.
