The Public Works Project (PWP), a government initiative, plans to implement approximately 516 projects in various sectors at a total cost of $55 million in 2008, according to Saeed Abdo Ahmed, project director.
Ahmed said that the PWP's main objectives are to create job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers, to provide infrastructure service projects for deprived communities, to enhance community participation in the development process and to improve the economic and environmental conditions of the poor.
Ahmed said that these projects for 2008 will be implemented in many sectors: 153 projects in the agricultural sector at a cost of $17.9 million, 52 projects in the water sector at a cost of $4 million, 31 in the paving sector and city improvement projects at a cost of $4 million, 20 projects in the vocational training and social affairs sectors costing $2.9 million, 18 sewage sector projects totaling $2.6 million and 35 projects in the health sector at a cost of $2.1 million.
