Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said urban chaos was becoming a way of life in India as infrastructure struggled to keep pace with the demand and called for concerted action to tackle the problems that came with rapid urbanisation.
"Our cities and towns are not an acceptable face of a rapidly modernizing and developing economy," Dr Singh said in his inaugural address at the National Conference on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) here this morning.
"This must clearly change and change for the better," he said, pointing out that, in the next 20 years, India's urban population could well double, posing a challenge and providing a unique opportunity which would require concerted action across all tiers of the country's federal system of governance.
