Ontario government announces infrastructure funds in Guelph

Guelph Mayor Karen Farbridge and local MPP Liz Sandals were joined in Guelph on Monday morning by Public Infrastructure Renewal Minister David Caplan to announce an expenditure of $300 million to revitalize infrastructure throughout the province

This new money, under the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative, is aimed to help communities restore and repair roads, bridges, water systems, sports and community centres and cultural facilities. In announcing the program, Caplan said the deadline for municipalities to submit funding applications is 15 February 2008 with dollars flowing by the end of March.

"We want the shovels in the ground this year," observed Caplan. Mayor Farbridge said that Guelph is already in the process of preparing a submission. The city is asking for funds to restore the Loretto Convent for use as the civic museum. This project has been under consideration for quite some time and has been approved by city council. However, with several other capital projects also being considered, funding is an issue. Farbridge said the amount of funding to be requested from the provincial government has yet to be decided.
