New $1.7bn hospital for SA 'should be public-private'

ADELAIDE'S planned billion dollar hospital should be built under a public-private partnership, South Australian Treasurer Kevin Foley says.

The $1.7 billion Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital will be built on railyards on the western fringe of the city's central business district, replacing the ageing Royal Adelaide Hospital. It is planned to open by 2016.

Mr Foley today announced as part of the 2007-08 state budget, preliminary funding of $213 million over the next four years for the hospital and an extra $520 million for improvements at other suburban hospitals.

He said construction of the Marjorie Jackson-Nelson Hospital would be paid with private money, or state government borrowing if a private deal could not been reached.
