Myanmar signs deal with Chinese firms to build hydroelectric power plant

YANGON, Myanmar: Myanmar has signed a memorandum of understanding with two Chinese firms to build a hydropower plant on the Thanlwin river in the northeast of the country, state media said Saturday.

The agreement to build the Upper Thanlwin hydropower project was signed Thursday between Myanmar's junta and China's Farsighted Investment Group Co. Ltd. and Gold Water Resources Co. Ltd., the New Light of Myanmar reported.

The 2,400-megawatt plant in northern Shan State, about 700 kilometers (430 miles) north of the country's largest commercial center Yangon, is one of several dam projects planned on the Thanlwin river.
