But it is becoming a mainstream strategy designed to snare better returns than the U.S. stock market. The money that poured into international mutual funds throughout 2006 turned out to be smart money. As the year draws to a close, large-cap international value funds and emerging-markets funds alike have averaged gains of nearly 30 percent, according to Lipper Inc.
