Macquarie: government by private enterprise

Macquarie Bank has replaced government in running infrastructure. Now it employs former politicians and bureaucrats to help. Kate Askew and Lisa Murray report.

Sydney (Sydney Morning Herald) - ON APRIL 17 Lord Macdonald of Tradeston addressed the European Infrastructure Leaders conference in Venice. He was in town pushing the interests of what London's Financial Times and Wall Street's Barron's had labelled "the upstart Aussie bank".

Macquarie is leading its peers in the areas of public-private partnerships and cross-border leasing in the United Kingdom and is expanding into other European markets. It has hired the former Blair government transport minister and member of the House of Lords to grease the way.
