Japan zeros in on infrastructure

Japanese investors are excited to hook up with the Vietnamese government through public-private partnerships to develop infrastructure projects.

More than 200 Japanese businesspeople gathered in Hanoi last week for the first "Vietnam-Japan Forum for Public-Private Partnership (PPP)", to initiate closer public and private relations and promote PPP in Vietnam.

Japanese entrepreneurs said it was time for Vietnam to promote sourcing investment from private sectors in both Vietnam and Japan, besides ODA funds, to build infrastructure, particularly international ports, information technology, energy and water supply networks, in order to meet the country's economic development.

"Infrastructure development was formerly regarded as the government's job. However, private participation would help infrastructure construction and service provision be more efficient," said Fukunari Kimura, Professor at Keio University's Faculty of Economics.
