Japan: PFI formula eyed for 2016 Olympic stadium

The Tokyo metropolitan government has decided to build a major stadium as a metropolitan facility using the private finance initiative (PFI) formula if Tokyo is chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

The decision will be submitted at an executive meeting of the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee to be held Tuesday.

However, some experts have voiced concern that extending transportation access to the site at metropolitan government-owned Harumi Wharf, in Chuo Ward, would be hugely expensive, despite hopes that using PFI would allow the government to tap private funds and know-how to keep costs down.
