Japan, ADB support rural development in Chittagong hill tracts


The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Government of Japan are providing financial support to lay the groundwork for a project which will strengthen water resources management and aid rural development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

A technical assistance agreement was signed today between the Government of Bangladesh and ADB at the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Those present, at the signing ceremony were Saifuddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary, Economic Relations Division; Abul Hossain, Joint Secretary (Development), Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs; Paul Heytens, Country Director of ADB's Bangladesh Resident Mission; and Akemi Yoshida, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan.

The Japan Special Fund and Multi-Donor Trust Fund of the Water Financing Partnership Facility will provide grants totaling $1.165 million to explore opportunities for small-scale water resources infrastructure and rural access investments in the area. Both grants will be administered by ADB.
