The recent pronouncement that Iraq's production targets will not be achieved within the next six years should be no surprise. The production targets set by Prime Minister Al Maliki and Oil Minister Shahristani were purely political in nature. Discussion of those targets will fade, and the numbers are likely to be forgotten entirely, as the existing oil infrastructure is upgraded and modernized in order to sustain, or even slightly improve, present production levels.
