The EU is counting on a record level of offshore wind construction to reach its 2020 renewables target. However, realizing the full potential of offshore wind power is contingent upon member states enacting appropriate policies and releasing adequate funding for supply chain and grid infrastructure development.
The EU is aiming to meet 20% of its energy requirements through renewable sources by 2020. In June 2010, member countries were required to submit National Renewable Energy Action Plans to the European Commission (EC), outlining their renewable energy strategies. Those plans which have been published so far indicate that EU members are aiming to increase their renewables contribution through significant expansion of onshore and offshore wind generation.
