The central government, bowing to pressure from vested interests, has moved to provide a guarantee for the messy monorail project in Jakarta, so that the project owners can secure financial support from the Dubai Islamic Bank.

It was Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, the main promoter of this controversial project, who announced that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had issued a presidential regulation as a legal basis for the government guarantee.
