India: Private players woo public hospitals

MUMBAI: A Jaslok at JJ Hospital, a Nanavati at Nair Hospital, or a Lilavati at Lokmanya Tilak Hospital may be anathema to many, but it is a fact that private health players are increasingly eyeing a slice of the public healthcare pie.

The buzz in medical circles is that private healthcare groups are vying for some space in the huge campus of the 160-year-old JJ Hospital in Byculla, easily one of the best addresses for public healthcare in the city. The plan is to seek to operate the entire cath-lab or at least to run an MRI machine in the hospital that gets over a thousand patients a day.
