India's first passenger train ran between Bombay and Thane in 1853; now Mumbai is all set to create rail history once again. Independent India's first private passenger train will run next year between Churchgate and Borivli.

Private rail networks, run by maharajas, became history after the British Indian Railways was nationalised in 1922. Nearly a century later, the private sector will return to operate in a vastly different India. In a country with a burgeoning middle class, private players might find a demand for air-conditioned trains beyond Mumbai in the hustle and bustle of small-town India.
