India: More PPP funds in national highways, but states get little

ROADS : Only two of the 32 IIFC projects are for state highways

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 : When it comes to financing Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the transport sector, state highways do not seem as rosy to financiers as their national counterparts do. Even though the Centre and states are currently undertaking about 3,500-4,000 km each of highway construction through the PPP route, funding agencies like IDFC and IIFC seem to have a marked preference for the former.

Sample this: Of the total of 32 road projects being funded by the India Infrastructure Finance Company (IIFC), only two come under the state highways, while another involves funding of the Bandra-Worli sea link. While the company has disbursed a total loan of Rs 2,570 crore on road projects so far, only Rs 430 crore has been granted to state highway projects.
