High-Speed Trains to Run in Russia

Russian Railways President Vladimir Yakunin attended the opening ceremony for the production of eight high-speed Velaro type trains for Russian Railways (RZhD) last Friday at the Siemens Transportation production plant near Krefeld, Germany. Designed especially for Russia, the trains are planned to enter service between Moscow and St. Petersburg in late 2009, Russian Railways announced. Simultaneously, Russian Railways is upgrading the tracks and guidance systems along the route, which will allow the trains to run up to 250 km/h, cutting travel time from the current eight hours to approximately 150 minutes.
