GE Water Says Sales May Rise 10% in '08, Opens Algerian Plant

Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- General Electric Co.'s water- treatment unit should see revenue climb at least 10 percent this year, pushed by a rise in large projects including desalination and wastewater treatment.

The company will open tomorrow the Hamma seawater desalination plant, Africa's largest, through a public-private partnership with the state-owned Algerian Energy Co. in Algiers, GE said in a statement. The plant will provide enough water for as many as 2 million residents in the area.

GE Water is targeting a potential $5 billion in such projects by 2010. So-called large structure projects like the Algiers plant last year made up about 12 percent of the unit's $2.3 billion in sales, said Jeff Garwood, chief executive officer of the division.
