The construction process of the Gautrain rapid-rail link project is moving ahead apace with Bombela, the company responsible for the construction and operation of the Gautrain system, having just celebrated reaching the 1-km mark in the construction of the tunnel at the Marlboro portal, Bombela Turnkey Contractor (Bombela TKC) tells Engineering News.

Bombela TKC civil construction engineer Oliver Gerstmann says that construction activity on the four-station network link between Sandton and OR Tambo International airport, which includes the stations at the airport, Marlboro, Sandton and Rhodesfield, is progressing simultaneously to meet the contracted mandate.

"We have a contract to complete Operation Commencement Date 1 (OCD 1), which is the Sandton to OR Tambo route, in 2010. The rest of the project, termed Operation Commencement Date 2 (OCD 2), has a project deadline of 2011, which is 54 months from the date of commencement,"states Gerstmann.
