EU and World Bank Welcome China As Partner Donor For Africa

European Union and World Bank top officials Wednesday welcomed China as a partner in development aid for poor African countries and said the fight against poverty should not be a hampered by competition between donors. "Development should not be followed as a competitive progress," World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz told reporters after a meeting with European Union development chief Louis Michel.

China was an increasing source of investment and had an "enormous amount to contribute to developing countries and especially to African countries," Wolfowitz said.

Over the last 20 years, the Asian state had achieved "quite remarkable results and is a stunning example of how a country can transform itself without following any Western textbook," he said.
