Ethiopia: Shelved Dam Project Rescued By China Financing

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) and China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) International signed a 1.3 billion Br contract last week, after the Chinese company was selected to start the Finchaa-Amerti-Neshe (FAN) hydro-electric power dam, which is one of the five dam projects that had been shelved due to lack of finances.

The FAN project, which is to be built on the Neshe River, located 250Km from Addis Abeba in Eastern Wolega Zone in the Oromia Regional State, will not exclusively generate hydro-electric power (of which it is intended to produce 100MW). This multi-purpose dam will also enable the irrigation of a 6,000hct plot nearby, where sugarcane is grown by the state-owned Fincha Sugar Factory.
