« Ethiopia looks east to slip reins of western orthodoxy | Main | Flotation of 3i infrastructure fund aims to bring in £1.3bn » February 6, 2007Chinese model is no panacea for Africa
Source: Financial Times China's footprint in Africa becomes more pronounced each time the continent receives another high-level Chinese delegation. President Hu Jintao's eight-nation tour of Africa this week has been no exception. In its wake we can expect more roads, more bridges and airports, more oil deals, more credit and also more Chinese labour on the continent. We can also expect more cheap Chinese imports. It has become fashionable for African leaders to argue that China's embrace of the continent offers them a new development model that eschews the tenets of western liberal market orthodoxy.
