BHP plan to build $4.3bn desal plant

BHP Billiton may build a $US3.5 billion ($A4.3 billion) plant to desalinate sea water for its Escondida site in northern Chile.

Minera Escondida, the company that manages the mine, submitted a plan for the plant to Chile's environmental regulator, the agency said on its website.
