The International Conference on Infrastructure Development and the
Environment is the eighth in the series of sustainable development
conferences initiated by the International Society for Environmental
Geotechnology (ISEG) in San Diego, California, USA in 1993. Following
INCEED 2005 in Charlotte, USA in 2005, ICIDEN ABUJA 2006 will convene
infrastructure development experts, environmental professionals, educators,
basic and applied scientists and policy-makers in economic sectors such as
mining/natural resources, petrochemicals development, agriculture,
transportation and civil/industrial construction to present new
information, and formulate and debate both planning and implementation
schemes aimed at addressing the development mechanisms, technologies,
enabling policies and environmental impacts of industrial/civil activities.
This will be the first ISEG Conference in Africa.

This conference is a continuation of our global conference series
involving UNESCO; International Society of Environmental Geotechnology
(ISEG); Finnish Environment Institute of Helsinki, Finland; Society of
Geopollution Control, Tokyo, Japan; Duke Energy Corporation, Charlotte,
USA; Korea Society of Soil and Groundwater Environment, Seoul, Korea;
Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction (GADR), Charlotte, USA; United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation, Abuja, Nigeria; and the Global Institute for Energy
and Environmental Systems (GIEES) of the University of North Carolina,
Charlotte, USA, among many other organizations. Previous events have been
held in San Diego, USA (1996), Boston, USA (1998), Nanjing, China (1999),
Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2000), Tokyo, Japan (2001), Seoul, Korea (2002),
Helsinki, Finland (2004) and Charlotte, USA (2005).
The average
participation level has been about 700 persons from about 50 different
countries. Important alliances on research, educational/ cultural
exchanges, technology development and marketing, and public policy
development have emerged from this conference series.
ICIDEN ABUJA 2006 will be held in Abuja, Nigeria at the
Sheraton Hotel,
from September 10 to 15, 2006. Abuja is a very beautiful and safe city.
It is well served by international airlines. Many international events in
Abuja have drawn senior government officials, scientists, tourists,
educators, corporate personnel and students to Abuja recently. ICIDEN
ABUJA is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants from 60
countries. The program of events planned includes about 400 technical and
policy presentations in several sessions, televised discussions in
town-hall settings, technology and program exhibitions, business networking
sessions, cultural dances, art exhibitions and regional tours.
