« Joint International Conference on Construction Culture, Innovation, and Management (CCIM) | Main | Construction Superconference » December 1, 20062nd Mega-Cities International Conference1-3 December, 2006, Guangzhou, China Although "Sustainable Cities" has no universally accepted definition, as a research theme it encompasses those studies that relate to sustaining one or more dimensions of a modern city over a long time horizon. Many of these studies are not confined to one traditional academic or professional discipline, and are hence best tackled with an interdisciplinary approach. The Sustainable Cities Research Theme Group recognizes that there are research activities related to Sustainable Cities scattered around the ASEAN region. The goal is to establish HKU as one of the international coordinators in "Sustainable Cities" research. Goals: Besides the immediate gains of seminars, publication of papers, professional networking and media exposure, the Conference is striving for long-term goals, including: 1. Formation of a Mega-cities Asia research group, which will develop joint research projects and systematize resources on issues of sustainability, urban planning, etc. 2. Exchanges (study, work-study, internships, professional positions) between architecture schools and corporates in the Mega-cities network, with special emphasis on opening opportunities for counterparts in Asia. 3. Academic Cooperation: A major strength of the Mega-cities network has been to establish a free-flow of ideas and ongoing discussions between architecture schools and architects (and engineers) in the private sector, including major construction companies. This has raised the awareness of the construction industry to the issues of sustainability, urban community and creativity in Asian cities, and ideally the same can happen to other cities.
